The regional start-up ecosystem around Freiburg features a number of players involved in start-up consulting and development, boasting many years’ experience in a range of structures and partnerships. The region focuses on sustainability and the green economy, health and life sciences including medical technology, IT and microsystems technology and the creative economy.

These players include institutions such as the chamber of commerce and the board of trade, industry associations, savings banks and credit unions, universities and colleges, as well as the economic development department. Additionally, an increasing number of medium-sized businesses is interested in innovative start-ups or their own start-up activities. Together with a number of private-sector initiatives that provide a range of locations for entrepreneurs and young businesses, such as Grünhof, BioTechPark and other start-up centres in Freiburg and the surrounding area, as well as events and information tailored for specific target groups, they address start-ups and would-be entrepreneurs from universities and businesses. They make use of a range of formats, such as the Freiburg Start-up Days, the Black Forest Venture Days or the regional Startinsland. A collective portal is under construction, with the objective of increasing transparency and visibility for the various providers and services on offer.

Two new start-up BW accelerators focusing on the smart green economy, sustainability and microsystems technology will extend the range of the Freiburg start-up ecosystem from July 2017, with the support of the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing, Baden-Wurttemberg. These are the accelerator „Start < Smart > Green“ developed collectively by FWTM and Grünhof, and the accelerator „badenCampus“ supported by Badenova, and based in Freiburg and Breisach. Their collective objective is to provide comprehensive support and advice for promising start-up ideas from innovative high-tech and services areas. These include spin-off companies from universities, colleges, extramural research institutions and mature and old SMEs, as well as initiatives from would-be entrepreneurs who are currently studying or planning to return from a career break.

A functioning, coordinated ecosystem for start-ups, spin-offs and young, innovative companies with tailored funding opportunities is vital to the success of the dynamic, regional start-up culture. Making the most of existing knowledge and ability and turning this into a combination of innovative products and services is key. The availability – and the right mix – of three location factors is essential to create the conditions required for a creative economy and a vibrant start-up culture, for more competitiveness and growth: Technology, talents and tolerance.

The universities and extramural bodies in the area – including Freiburg University, six colleges, five Fraunhofer Institutes and a Hahn-Schickard department – are important trendsetters and partners for innovative, technology-oriented businesses and a hotbed for young, innovative companies and entrepreneurs and their creative business ideas.

By concentrating on natural and applied sciences and attracting new, application-oriented research institutions and innovative companies, Freiburg continues to emphasise the dynamic nature of its location, not just in terms of the number of residents and jobs and the resulting economic power. The surrounding area and the region as a whole benefit from this, and from close historical links to the regional centre. The economic structure of the region has long been characterised by medium-sized businesses, including numerous technological groundbreakers and global market leaders, hidden champions and a strong services sector.

Focusing on future-proof, knowledge-based growth industries has given this location a host of advantages over its international competitors. Technology and industry-oriented clusters and networks such as BioRegio Freiburg | BioValley, Green City Freiburg and MicroTEC Südwest provide the region with unique selling points. Then you have well-educated and highly-motivated employees and experts. Situated in the border triangle Germany – France – Switzerland, Freiburg enjoys a reputation as a cosmopolitan, tolerant and vibrant city that is particularly pleasant to live in and is especially attractive to talented and creative individuals. Freiburg has the youngest population of any town or city in Germany, with an average age of 39.8 years.
